To sustainably grow a diverse variety of crops that benefit the local community and the environment (long term).

Productive Boundaries

  • Smaller plots (of perhaps several acres each)
  • Species-rich boundaries: cropping, supporting wildlife, improving soil

  • Educational (e.g. hedge-laying, sustainable management, wildlife)
  • Secure boundaries (where livestock anticipated)

  • Diverse produce: fresh fruit, juice, preserves, animal feed, compost
  • Diverse species: apple, pear, plum cherry, quince, medlar etc.
  • Local, old-fashioned (yet productive) varieties (that drive interest)
  • Educational (e.g. grafting, formative pruning, tasting)
  • Wildlife/environment friendly

Vegetables

  • Fresh seasonal produce available locally (shop, box scheme, co-op)
  • Ethical, environmentally sound methods (ideally organic)
  • Polytunnels for tender crops
  • Diverse heritage varieties
  • Community involvement in growing, processing and delivery
  • Minimal wastage (surplus trading, preserves, animal feed, compost)

Cereal Crops

  • Novel varieties: Spelt, Emmer, Einkorn, Bere, Triticale, Maris Widgeon
  • Diverse usage: thatch, flour, malt, hay, animal feed
  • Heritage threshing methods for local thatching projects
  • Milled or malted locally, thatch supplied to local thatchers

  • Value-added produce: juices, preserves and such
  • Diverse species/varieties (incl. heritage)
